Delta Airlines set to have 2 flights to view solar eclipse

(KRON) — Delta Airlines is completing a task the airlines have never done. Two flights will fly along the path of totality during a total solar eclipse, according to the Delta Airlines website.

The two Delta flights that will be traveling are DL 1218 and DL 1010. The DL 1218 will travel from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport to Dallas Fort Worth International Airport. The flight DL 1010 travels from Detroit Metropolitan Airport to the Dallas Fort Worth International Airport.

Delta Capt. Phillip Marshall and Lead Line Check Pilot Capt. Phil Daniels expressed their elation when they were informed they would be flying the DL 1218 AUS-DTW route.

“It was definitely exciting to be selected to do something we don’t ever get to do,” Daniels said. “I’m looking forward to giving customers memories to hold on to and to fly with my boss.”

“I was very excited about the opportunity to do something like this and for our A220 fleet to be highlighted,” Marshall said. “I’m always willing to do what it takes to get the job done, and I always love flying with Phil.”

The eclipse will travel across the United States at 1,600 miles per hour, according to Delta. The aircraft will be moving at about 480 miles per hour.

According to Delta, the path of totality and the flights’ paths will come together in the middle of the flights. Delta pilots have practiced the timing of an “S-turn”, which will allow flight passengers optimal viewing on both sides of the aircraft during the four-minute totality duration.
