Delhi gang-rape case to start in new fast-track court set up to handle crimes against women

NEW DELHI - Legal proceedings in a gang-rape case that has sparked protests about the treatment of woman are beginning in a new fast-track court set up specifically to deal with crimes against women in New Delhi.

Five men are due to appear in the special court Monday afternoon to face charges they raped and murdered a 23-year-old student aboard a moving bus in the capital last month.

A sixth suspect in the attack claims to be a juvenile and his case is being handled separately.

The attack has brought the little discussed topic of crime against women to the forefront in India. However some activists have raised concerns that the fast-track court system was not the answer to protect women.
