Delaware lawmaker proposes more casinos

Democratic lawmaker proposes 2 new casinos in Delaware

DOVER, Del. (AP) -- A Democratic state lawmaker is reintroducing legislation to allow more casinos in Delaware.

The bill sponsored by Rep. Dennis Williams of Wilmington calls for two new casinos, one in New Castle County and one in Sussex County.

The bill is similar to one sponsored by Williams that died in committee two years ago amid opposition from Delaware's three existing racetrack casinos and leaders of horse owners associations whose members race at those tracks. Williams says the horse owners seem more amenable to the latest proposal.

Williams believes the addition of two upscale casinos would draw more out-of-state gamblers to Delaware while creating hundreds of construction and casino jobs.

Opponents have argued in the past that the gambling market in the region is already saturated, and that additional casinos won't help.
