Delano inmate sentenced in cellmate’s killing

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — A man who was already serving a life term in prison for murder was sentenced Thursday after pleading no contest to strangling his cellmate at Kern Valley State Prison in Delano.

According to court records, Jorge L. Mendoza received a 22-year prison term after pleading no contest to voluntary manslaughter in the March 2022 death of Juan E. Mendoza. The men were not related.

Case dismissed after standoff suspect found incompetent

At the time of the killing, Jorge Mendoza, 28, was serving a life sentence for second-degree murder in a case out of Monterey County. Juan Mendoza, 26, was serving a six-year sentence for second-degree attempted murder and personal use of a dangerous weapon in a case out of San Bernardino County.
