Del. governor notified of Fisker layoffs; carmaker planned to build autos in Wilmington plant
DOVER, Del. (AP) -- Delaware Gov. Jack Markell's office says Fisker Automotive has notified the state of plans to lay off most of its remaining work force.
Markell spokeswoman Cathy Rossi said in an email Friday that Delaware officials were disheartened to learn of the company's plans.
The electric hybrid automobile maker laid off about three-fourths of the workers at its California headquarters Friday as it struggles with financial and production problems.
Fisker had planned to produce cars at a former General Motors plant in Wilmington. The company had said it expected to eventually employ more than 2,000 people at the Delaware plant.
Rossi said the state will continue to work with Fisker's investors and remaining management to make the best of the situation.
