Deflate Gate needs to come to an end

Deflate Gate
Deflate Gate

If I never hear the words Deflate Gate in a sentence again I’d be just fine with that.

This controversy has taken on a life of its own in such a way that deflated footballs have little-to-nothing to do with it anymore.

Some days the way you feel about Tom Brady’s suspension is a referendum on your most fundamental cultural, political and spiritual beliefs. The level of passion and vitriol that it has inspired among some fans borders on the surreal.

Observe the latest meltdown, which comes from Ben Affleck appearing on Bill Simmons’ new show, Any Given Wednesday. (Language is most definitely not safe for work.)

Angry Ben Affleck rants on Deflate Gate

On a related note, Ben Affleck’s rage-afflicted Batman was the only part of that last movie that wasn’t completely terrible.

Moving on…

The latest on this never-ending saga is if Tom Brady loses his appeal, his new lawyer plans on framing this as a grand injustice against the American worker and may take it all the way to the Supreme Court. No, seriously. Lester Munson of ABC News explains:

“According to Olson and his impressive supporting cast, the court decision in April that reinstated Brady’s suspension threatens the “rule of law” in the U.S. and is an “egregious misstatement” of American employment law…”

If reading that caused you to throw up in your mouth a little bit join the club.

Olson has an extensive track record with the Supreme Court. Munson says he’s argued 62 cases and won 75 percent of them. Because this case could not possibly get any more weird, Brady’s career record stands at 194-60, or .764 percent.

Maybe Tom Terrific and his Team of Terrible Lawyers would actually win if they make it to the Supreme Court. Maybe he has some perfectly legitimate points about Roger Goodell and the NFL bungling nearly every facet of the Wells investigation. Maybe New England would have crushed Indianapolis anyway even with fully-inflated footballs.

These maybes and might-bes and what-ifs are not nearly as important as the ludicrous and frankly dangerous idea that Brady’s case deserves the attention of the Supreme Court.

Tens of thousands of egregious violations of American employment law happen every single day. How sick would it be if Deflate Gate took precedence over them?

I don’t care if you think Brady is totally innocent or if he should never play another game. If you really believe his case deserves to be heard at the Supreme Court your priorities are sincerely screwed up.

Somebody please step up and bring this clown show to an end. America needs it.
