‘Definitely a lot of black ice’: Spring snowstorm creates road issues across Denver metro

DENVER (KDVR) — Colorado’s latest spring snowstorm impacted travel across the state.

“It was pretty slick and icy,” Vandell Prueitt, a truck driver, said. “It didn’t look like there was too much snow staying on the actual road, but there was definitely a lot of black ice.”

Colorado State Patrol said it responded to dozens of crashes Monday morning.

“This morning, they saw a lot of crashes out today,” Trooper Gabriel Moltrer said. “A lot of crashes on I-70 and we’ve had multiple motor assists out there as well.”

While road conditions improved as the day went on, Colorado Department of Transportation spokesperson Tamara Rollison said some areas will continue to be slick.

“The sun has helped our plow operations greatly in clearing the snow, slush and ice today, but the pavement will be wet,” she said. “The challenge that we have today versus last week is the temperatures are very cold, so wet pavement will likely freeze tonight.”

She said this could increase the risk of slick conditions overnight and Tuesday morning, especially on overpasses and bridges.

“We had and we continue to have about 100 plows out. We are going full force,” Rollison said. “We’re not out of this storm yet so we encourage motorists to be incredibly careful when you’re out there driving, give yourself plenty of following distance, pay attention. There still will be some icy areas.”

CDOT told FOX31 it did not pretreat the roads ahead of this storm because of the rain, but plows will be spraying deicer in areas that need it.
