Dee Gordon is all of us reacting to this epic Giancarlo Stanton homer
Call him Giancarlo Stanton. Call him “Cruz,” which is the nickname he’s wearing on his Marlins uniform for MLB Players Weekend. Call him anything you like — except maybe Mike — but make sure to add unstoppable at the beginning.
That’s the only proper term to describe the Miami Marlins slugger since starting his remarkable home run tear right before the All-Star break. That tear continued in a big way in Friday’s 8-6 win against the Padres, as Stanton connected again, and then again, for his 48th and 49th home runs of the season. In the process, he managed to blow the mind of his teammate Dee Gordon, who had perhaps the best view of and reaction to Stanton’s first homer.

That two-run blast came in the first inning, and it was among the hardest he’s ever hit. At 118.2-mph off the bat, it was seventh-hardest hit home run that’s been measured by Statcast since it began measuring homers in 2015, and the third-hardest hit by Stanton during that time. All Gordon could do was shake his head in astonishment as he went along for the ride.

In that moment, Dee Gordon captured what we were all feeling as we watched Stanton smash yet another homer into orbit. It doesn’t matter how many times we’ve seen it before, Stanton’s power is simply jaw-dropping.
Stanton’s recent production has been jaw-dropping too.
Tonight is Stanton's 9th multi-HR game this year and 6th just since July 5.
Nobody else has more than 6 such games all season.

That is a home run barrage of epic proportions.
As for Friday’s game, Stanton finished with two homers, a two-run double and a walk that set up Marcell Ozuna’s game-winning three-run homer. Stanton’s five RBIs in the win matched a career-high that he’s now equaled five times. His 105 RBIs on the season tied a career high, but that mark won’t last too much longer.
The only questions we can ask now is just how high will his numbers go before the season ends, and will they be enough to earn him the National League MVP.
