Declines in daily new COVID-19 cases, deaths continue

May 29—A downward trend of new COVID-19 cases and deaths continued throughout the state and across a seven-county region of Northeast Pennsylvania, according to the state Department of Health's daily update released Saturday.

The department reported 832 new cases statewide Saturday, as compared to 1,007 new cases Friday. That brings the statewide total of cases to 1,201,375.

The NEPA region of Lackawanna, Luzerne, Monroe, Pike, Susquehanna, Wayne and Wyoming counties added 57 cases, as compared to 76 new cases Friday, and for a new total of 77,591.

The department reported 16 new deaths throughout the state, as compared to 24 new deaths recorded Friday. The statewide death toll now stands at 27,203.

The NEPA counties had one new death, in Luzerne County, which was the same number and location as the prior day. The regional total of deaths now stands at 1,852.

Saturday's figures represent a continuation from Friday, when the last workweek in May ended with new COVID-19 cases dropping sharply again regionally and statewide, and deaths falling by smaller percentages.

In Saturday's numbers for the local counties:

Lackawanna added eight cases for 18,436 total, including 2,889 probable, and remained at 473 deaths.

Luzerne added 26 cases for 31,777 total, including 2,585 probable. One new death increased the total to 812.

Monroe added nine cases for 14,688 total, including 458 probable, and remained at 317 deaths.

Pike added four cases for 3,986 total, including 432 probable, and remained at 54 deaths.

Susquehanna added six cases for 2,633 total, including 346 probable, and remained at 62 deaths.

Wayne added one case for 4,103 total, including 437 probable, and remained at 80 deaths.

Wyoming added three cases for 1,968 total, including 349 probable, and remained at 54 deaths.
