Christmas Tea Light Jars

This pin-ready decoration comes courtesy of The Frugal Girls, and takes just minutes to put together.

First, you need clean glass canning jars, like such ($34 for 12). Next, take a Sharpie poster paint marker ($5) and artfully scribble your message on the outside of the jar. Tie a length of wagon red satin ribbon ($9) around the top for a dollop of festive color. Finish with an amber yellow battery-powered LED tea light ($15 for 24), and you're ready to snap that Pinterest photo!

Of course, you don’t have to stick only to Christmas carol lyrics. Use this craft idea as a platform for all manner of holiday artwork. Grab poster markers in different colors to create candy cane stripes, “Santa Stop Here,” Nativity scenes, Stars of David, or anything else that comes to mind. Give everyone in the family a jar to decorate, and line your creations along a windowsill to shine light both indoors and out.

Hanukkah Candle Light Jars

Here’s a variation on the tea light jar that will bring an extra sparkle to your Hanukkah celebration. This Mama Loves suggests using Epsom salt and food coloring to turn glass jars into glittery candle (or tea light) holders. As this crafting entails cans of adhesive and sealer, we recommend applying the spray parts on a porch or garage—or, at the least, after putting down newspaper!

How to make the jars: first, spill a generous helping of Epsom salt ($3) into a bowl. Next, add food coloring ($6) to turn it an icey, on-season shade of iridescent blue.

Spray the outside of a clean glass canning jar with Krylon scrapbooking adhesive ($14). and roll it in the bowl until the outside of the is thoroughly coated with the colored salt. Next, spray blast it with Krylon clear sealer ($9) to lock the salt in place. (If you’re doing this project with kids, you might to divide the labor: adults spray, children roll. You know, because safety!)

Once everything has settled, accessorize with a battery-operated tea light and watch your Hanukkah decorations cast a holiday glow.

Snowflake Wall Hangings

This holiday craft comes from Natalie Shaw at DoodleCraft, and it’s a fun way to add a splash of holiday color to blank walls or windows.

Grab a pack of craft sticks ($9), and use Mod Podge ($4) to glue the ends into snowflake shapes.

Once your snowflakes have dried, lend them some color with gold spray paint ($9) and yellow ribbon ($4) before affixing them to the wall.

But don’t feel like you have to stick with the gold snowflakes you see in the picture. Paint your snowflakes white, or silver, or cover them with glitter or stick-on rhinestones. With a bit of creativity, you can make these wall hangings your own, the better to reflect your unique take on holiday decor.

Star Of David Wall Hangings

Since we’re discussing decorations that involve wooden craft sticks (or popcicle sticks!) and Mod Podge, we have to feature these gorgeous Star of David wall hangings from Pinterest user Danielle A.

They’re pretty simple to put together: glue craft sticks into a Star of David shape, then use spray paint to add color and ribbon to hang. If you’re looking for a colorblock that's more wintery, consider ocean blue enamel spray paint ($9) paired with blueberry satin ribbon ($4). For a more rustic look, leave your Stars of David as is—unpainted and in their natural wood color—and suspend with jute twine ($4).

These stars work well individually, but you can also string them together into a garland and hang them in a window, across a mantelpiece, or along a staircase. Think about what arrangement might look best in your home.

Star Garlands

We’re sticking with the star motif for one last project, because these silvery garlands from Cook, Quilt, Make, and Bake are festive enough to take you all the way through December and into New Year’s Eve.

You’ll need long strands of string, yarn, or jute twine, as well as shimmery silver card stock ($25), plus everyone’s favorite craft glue, Mod Podge.

Stencil your card stock into star shapes—yes, Star of David shapes work too—and be careful to cut every star shape the exact same size.

Next, glue two stars together, silver side out, around the string. Cook, Quilt, Make, and Bake suggests embedding a penny inside the star at the bottom of the string, so that your garland will hang straight down once it is finished.

As with the other crafts on this list, you can customize it endlessly—the only limit is your imagination. From snowflakes to Champagne glasses, these decorations are all about celebrating the holiday your way.

Even better, they can all be Pinterest-ready decor in a single afternoon!
