Decision to reopen Camp Sayla still up in the air; county officials

HENRY COUNTY, Ala. (WDHN) — Camp Sayla, a camp for troubled young people is still not accepting teens.

In the past, the camp has been plagued by stories of abuse and building violations, which forced the camp to shut down.

Their license was reinstated in March, but Henry County officials say Sayla still is not officially reopened and it will probably be another couple of weeks before a decision is made if they will reopen.

Before they were shut down, a supervisor at the facility, Kenyatta Danzey, was arrested and charged with 17 counts of child abuse.

Court records claimed the supervisor beat male juveniles with a potato-stuffed sock, hit them in the head with broom handles, and punched them on several parts of their bodies.
