Decatur Police investigating possible arson after Tuesday evening house fire

DECATUR, Ill. (WCIA) — The Decatur Fire Department responded to a house fire possibly caused by arson Tuesday evening.

Around 6:59 p.m., Decatur firefighters were dispatched to 658 E. Wood St. Upon arrival, firefighters saw heavy smoke coming from the second floor apartment. The firefighters quickly worked to confine the flames to one room in the second story apartment. The fire was under control by just under an hour later, around 7:38 p.m.

Officials say due to the “suspicious nature” of the fire, the State Fire Marshal and Decatur Police Department were called in to investigate.

Decatur police detained a suspect, who ended up confessing to setting the fire intentionally.

There were no injuries reported. The resident living on the first-floor of the apartment was displaced and is receiving assistance from Red Cross.
