Decatur Fire Dept. battles two house fires in 90 minutes

DECATUR, Ill. (WCIA) — The Decatur Fire Department responded to two house fires within 90 minutes on Thursday, one of which resulted in seven people being displaced.

The first fire happened around 2:11 p.m. on Hill Avenue between King and Marietta Streets. Officials said flames were found on the first floor of a one-and-a-half story home and were brought under control by the first engine company to arrive. Other crews assisted in ventilation, searching the home for victims and overhaul.

35 minutes after being dispatched to Hill Avenue, as firefighters were wrapping up their efforts there, another fire broke out two miles away at East and South Drives. Firefighters braved heavy smoke and high heat conditions in the basement to extinguish the fire, which was accomplished after about 45 minutes.

Both fires were determined to have been caused by electrical issues, officials said. Seven people — three adults and four children — were displaced by the Hill Avenue fire and are receiving assistance from the American Red Cross.
