Death in Paradise star Ralf Little has revealed his dream role after leaving the murder-mystery series last month.

Having played DI Neville Parker on the sunshine isle of Saint Marie for four years, as well as Antony Royle in The Royle Family and Jonny Keogh in Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps, Little told The Big Issue all about his villainous aspirations.

"I want to push myself out of my comfort zone and do more things that scare me or that I maybe feel a bit intimidated by," he said.

"I'd love to play a villain. It would be so nice to just play someone horrible – I've spent my whole career playing nice guys. I want to surprise myself."

Further along, Little also opened up about the public's altered perception of him after tackling crime on their screens.

"Now people are talking about Death in Paradise just as much [as The Royle Family]. That evolution feels very satisfying. It's the next step of my life. I was a kid when I did The Royle Family. I'm a middle-aged man now," he shared.

Appearing on BBC Breakfast recently, the actor suggested he didn't want to bow out as Neville in Death in Paradise.

"I had talks with the BBC, and with [production company] Red Planet, and we all agreed that it just felt… if it was in my heart, like if it was just a heart decision, I'd have wanted to do it for 20 more years," he told the presenters.

"But just for the show, and for my character Neville, it just sort of felt like his story… it deserved to be finished, and his journey deserved to be completed, and he deserved a nice happy ending. And so it just felt right."

Death in Paradise and its spin-off, Beyond Paradise, both air on BBC One and stream on BBC iPlayer.
