Death in Paradise's Ralf Little has congratulated his successor Don Gilet on Instagram.

Fresh from the news of Gilet's casting yesterday (May 2), Little sent a congratulatory message on social media.

The actor, who played DI Neville Parker on the BBC One show, shared a sweet video saying: "I have actually known for a couple of weeks, but obviously couldn't say anything.

"The new detective is the wonderful Don Gilet! And I just wanna say, from me to you, Don, I hope you have the most wonderful time.

"It's the most magical experience, and I just hope you just get everything out of it, and I wish you the best of luck.

"I'm absolutely sure you're gonna be magnificent. Cheers, mate."

EastEnders and Shetland star Gilet will make his debut as Detective Inspector Mervin Wilson in this year's Death in Paradise Christmas special.

"Being offered the new lead role in Death in Paradise feels like a deeply loved and incredibly precious jewel has been placed in my hands," he said.

"This is a big show, with a big heart and the love continually grows for it.

"It is my intention to never lose sight of that and to remain grateful, humbled and dedicated. Even during those testing times when every sinew is screaming at me to run off the set and dive into the sea, swimming pool or an ice-cold beer – whichever happens to be closer at the time!"

Meanwhile, executive producer Tim Key also welcomed Gilet to the long-running series, describing him as an "amazing actor".

"We're delighted that he's joining us as the show enters another exciting new era," he teased.

"We've got huge plans for the new series and beyond, and I can't wait for the audience to meet Mervin and to see what we've got in store."

Gilet is now filming in Guadeloupe alongside his new Death in Paradise co-stars Don Warrington, Shantol Jackson, Ginny Holder, Élizabeth Bourgine and Danny John-Jules.

Death in Paradise and its spin-off, Beyond Paradise, both air on BBC One and stream on BBC iPlayer.
