Former Death in Paradise star Ben Miller has responded to the idea of who could play the next detective following Ralf Little's departure.

Little confirmed his exit as DI Neville Parker after last weekend's season 13 finale, having taken on the role for four years.

While his replacement is yet to be unveiled, Miller – who played the show's first lead as DI Richard Poole – has weighed in on who he thinks should take over.

"Oh my God, there are so many people who'd be brilliant," he told RadioTimes.com, before suggesting: "Toby Jones, that's who I'd like to see."

Miller also said a female detective could "definitely work", adding: "I could see that, 100%. I think that'd be good too. If we're playing fantasy detectives, Miranda Hart."

Little's last Death in Paradise episode saw his character Neville and DS Florence Cassell (Josephine Jobert) sail off into the sunset.

Confirming his exit after the episode aired, Little said: "My time on Saint Marie has come to an end – what an end! New adventures await Neville, and he got to sail away into the sunset with his best friend. Who knows what happens for them next!"

The star went on to thank fans, saying it had been "an absolute privilege and a pleasure to bring Neville Parker to all of you and to share his quite profound journey with you".

He added: "It's been one of the most magical and profound experiences of my entire life. The team that makes Death in Paradise – the producers, writers, directors, crew, guest cast, and my magnificent co-stars – they know what they're doing, and the future is in good hands.

"I can't wait to see what happens next. It's been the ride of a lifetime."

Death in Paradise airs on and its spin-off, Beyond Paradise, both air on BBC One and stream on BBC iPlayer.
