With not just one but two related murders to solve tonight, the Saint Marie PD certainly had a lot to be getting on with – and they were doing it all one member of the team down.

Death in Paradise fan-favourite character Florence Cassell (Josephine Jobert) only appeared briefly in tonight's (January 24) episode, popping up for a small appearance at the beginning before she was whisked away on holiday by her new boyfriend Patrice Campbell (Leemore Marrett Jr).

With Florence away, JP (Tobi Bakare) stepped up to help out DI Jack Mooney (Ardal O'Hanlon) on the case – which saw the team investigating the death of a young TV presenter called Catrina (Kimberley Nixon), who was found washed up on the beach after going for a midnight swim.

But viewers couldn't help but miss Florence being around:

Fortunately, unlike Danny John-Jules' exit as Dwayne Myers, Florence's absence won't be permanent as she returned at the end of the episode after the murder had been solved with a big grin on her face and a new engagement ring on her finger.

And then there's the fact that actress Josephine Jobert also confirmed she'll be back next week too.

Speaking ahead of the new series' premiere earlier this month, Jobert admitted she was unsure of her character's new plot, explaining that she didn't know how she felt about Florence having a boyfriend.

"When the producer called me, a few months before we started filming, he told me about the story and I really did not want to have a love story, because I love the fact that she's a girl but she's really into her work and she's serious and she's an action girl," Jobert told Digital Spy.

"So when he told me, 'OK, this year you're going to have a boyfriend', I was like, 'Oh no, please no!' but then he told me what was going to happen with that boyfriend in the story, and I was like, 'That's brilliant, let's go for it!' I love it."

Death in Paradise continues next Thursday (January 31) at 9pm on BBC One.
