DeAngelo Williams latest injury casualty for the Steelers

The injuries continue to mount and mount some more for the 2016 Pittsburgh Steelers.

The latest victim is reserve veteran running back DeAngelo Williams, who tweaked a previous knee injury in the loss to the Dolphins last Sunday, didn’t practice all week, and has officially been ruled out of this week’s game against the Patriots at Heinz Field.

In terms of immediate impact, the loss of Williams won’t be as significant as some other recent injuries (more on those in a moment), that is, of course, unless something happens to star running back Le’Veon Bell, who is expected to carry a huge workload in the game against New England.

Third on the Steelers depth chart at running back is Fitzgerald Toussaint, who has only four carries for seven yards this season. Behind Toussaint (at least as of right now) is nobody. However, Toussaint did step up a year ago in the playoffs and provide valuable playing time in the absence of both Bell and Williams, who missed the entire postseason with injuries.

In addition to Williams, quarterback Ben Roethlisberger (knee), defensive end Cameron Heyward (hamstring), right tackle Marcus Gilbert (ankle), receiver Markus Wheaton (shoulder), safety Shamarko Thomas (groin) and backup center Cody Wallace (knee) are all listed as out for Sunday’s game, with the top three names on the aforementioned list (especially the first one) being the primary reason Pittsburgh is a 7.5 point home dog against the Patriots.

The good news on the injury front is that safeties Mike Mitchell and Robert Golden, as well as inside linebacker Ryan Shazier (who’s missed the last three games with a sprained MCL), all practiced fully on Friday and should be ready to go for Sunday’s game.
