Deal could end strike by elevator technicians

Even the CBC was affected by the two-month elevator technicians strike.

A deal has been reached that could end the two-month-old strike by elevator repair technicians in Ontario.

The National Elevator and Escalator Association said Friday the union representing the technicians had agreed to an offer aimed at ending the strike.

There has been no official comment from the union, or any information on when members might vote on the offer.

Members of the International Union of Elevator Constructors went on strike May 1.

"NEEA's offer to the IUEC, which the union has accepted, will allow NEEA's member companies to achieve greater control over their workforce, increase flexibility over costs for customers, and includes a wage increase for the next three years that is consistent with what other trades have received," the association said in its news release.

The association says it hopes that all technicians will be back on the job by July 10.
