Deadpool & Wolverine is set to unleash a completely different version of Hugh Jackman's mutant.

Wolverine was the lynchpin of the original X-Men trilogy and headlined several spin-off movies concluding with Logan. However, teaming up with Deadpool (reprised by Ryan Reynolds) for this summer's Phase 5 MCU blockbuster sees him apparently breaking new ground.

While speaking to Empire Magazine, Jackman and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige were asked if the Wolverine in Deadpool & Wolverine was not the "exact same" character seen in previous films.

"Correct," Feige confirmed.

Jackman also discussed putting on that yellow costume straight out of the comic books.

"We almost did it in The Wolverine," he said. "But from the moment I put it on here, I was like, 'How did we never do this?' It looked so right, it felt so right. I was like, 'That's him'.

"There are different sides of Wolverine we haven't seen before in the movies. It was exciting for me. It's great for Deadpool to have someone who will punch him in the face."

Feige said he initially encouraged the actor not to return as Wolverine following "the greatest ending in history with Logan".

Jackman had other ideas, recalling: "I was about an hour into the drive, and that question came into my head: 'What do I want to do?' And as soon as I asked the question, I wanted to do Deadpool & Wolverine. I just knew it.

"I drove for another hour. Couldn't stop thinking about it. And I got out of the car, called Ryan, and said, 'Ryan, if you'll have me, I'm in'."

Deadpool & Wolverine hits cinemas on July 26, while both Deadpool and Deadpool 2 are streaming on Disney+.
