Homeless man hit, killed by car near LEGOLAND Florida

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (WFLA) — A homeless man was hit and killed by a car early Thursday near LEGOLAND Florida.

The crash happened in the eastbound lane of Cypress Gardens Boulevard, just east of the intersection with Lake Ruby Drive around 1:15 a.m., about two miles from LEGOLAND.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office said a Kia Soul driver reported seeing the 43-year-old man in the middle of Cypress Gardens Boulevard seconds before impact.

Deputies said the driver braked but was unable to avoid hitting the man. The homeless man died at the scene.

According to deputies, the man frequently crossed Cypress Gardens Boulevard to go to the 7-Eleven store and the Murphy gas station in the area.

He was walking north across the four-lane highway, which is not an area designated for pedestrians, the sheriff’s office said.

Deputies said they are working on locating and notifying the man’s relatives of his death.

The driver stayed at the scene following the crash.
