Card skimmers are typically placed on top of credit card readers to steal credit card information.

MPD reminded consumers to be careful and mindful before making a purchase with a card. Before inserting your card, you should:

  • Make sure you can’t move the device when you touch it;

  • Compare it to the one next to yours if you can;

  • Check the alignment of the reader and the panel underneath it; and

  • Look inside the reader before inserting your card.

If you suspect there is a card skimmer, MPD said you should immediately contact police via 911. You should also notify your bank immediately if you think a skimmer may have taken your card information.
