Daylight Saving Time begins this weekend

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Daylight Saving Time begins Sunday, March 10, 2024. The idea was created to align the hours you wake up with the hours the sun was out to conserve candle usage. Philosophers started investigating the concept in 1908 and in 1916 Daylight Saving Time was implemented Nationwide in Austria-Hungary and the German Empire.

With electricity becoming more widespread, there is always debate whether we should stop it all together. Until a decision is made, we will continue to use it, so the clock turns from 2 a.m. to 3 a.m. on Sunday.

Why do we set clocks forward in the spring?

Yes, we will lose an hour of sleep, but the sun will set an hour later at 6:51 p.m. Each day we are gaining more time with the sun out. Ryan Husted, the Warning Coordination Meteorologist for NWS Nashville explained that each day through mid-April we will gain about two minutes and fifteen seconds of daylight.

This will make an enormous difference for kids wanting to get outside after school, adults not driving home in the dark after work, and having time to sit on the porch and enjoy the sunset or sunrise if you are an early riser. Spring starts in less than two weeks.
