Davis library project receives $850K in funding

(FOX40.COM) — A planned Davis library project received $850,000 in funding, city officials announced Monday.

Davis city and Yolo County officials were presented with a $850,000 check from Rep. Mike Thompson for a new Walnut Park Library project in South Davis. The funding was secured from the appropriations government funding bill that was signed into law on March 9, officials said.

“We sincerely thank Representative Mike Thompson’s office and the Appropriations Committee for their support of the Walnut Park Library,” Davis Mayor Josh Chapman said in a release from Thompson’s office. “The new library will be a valuable asset to the South Davis community, providing access, education, entertainment, and inspiration to children, families, and residents.”

According to city officials, the funds will go toward the Walnut Park Library, a project in South Davis that is anticipated to begin construction in late 2024/early 2025 with a completion date around October 2026.

According to Yolo County Library, the Walnut Park Library will be located at 2700 Lillard Drive at the west end of Walnut Park and will be approximately 12,000 square feet. The total cost of the project is $21.3 million, according to the library website.

The library is expected to bring programs and resources to the community related to literacy, health, housing, engagement, and connectivity, officials said.

In 2022, Yolo County officials secured a $8.7 million grant from the California State Library. A year later, the city of Davis pledged $1.5 million toward the project with funds from the American Rescue Plan Act and Developer Impact Fees.
