WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — U.S. Rep. David Trone (D-Md.) released a statement Friday, apologizing for using a racial slur he used at a hearing on Thursday.

Trone, who currently is running for Maryland’s U.S. Senate seat, used the derogatory term for a Black person while he was at a congressional budget hearing.

What’s in the spending bill?

The statement Trone provided to DC News Now after the incident said:

While attempting to use the word bugaboo in a hearing, I used a phrase that is offensive. That word has a long, dark, terrible history. It should never be used any time, anywhere, in any conversation. I recognize that as a White man, I have privilege. And as an elected official, I have a responsibility for the words I use. Regardless of what I meant to say, I shouldn’t have used that language, and I apologize.

Trone is considered the Democratic frontrunner in his matchup against fellow Democrat Angela Alsobrooks, Prince George’s County Executive.

A recent poll by DC News Now, Emerson College, and The Hill showed Trone leading Alsobrooks by 7%.

Although the same poll showed Trone in a dead heat with former Maryland Governor Larry Hogan (R-Md.), a Washington Post-University of Maryland (UMD) poll shows Hogan topping Democrats by double digits.

All candidates are hoping to be elected to the U.S. Senate seat that will be vacant when Sen. Ben Cardin (D-Md.) finishes his time in Congress.
