(BANG) -

Former 'Doctor Who' stars David Tennant and Sophie Aldred are teaming up for a new children's TV programme.

The actor - who played the tenth incarnation of the Time Lord from 2005 to 2010 - will voice lead character Tom, a boy with magical powers, in 'Tree Fu Tom'.

Sophie, who played the Seventh Doctor's assistant Ace in the 1980s, is to voice his friend Twigs.

The CBeebies show will see Tom encourage viewers to help with his magical spells with gentle physical movements as it is aimed at helping the movement development of 4-6 year olds.

Kay Benbow, controller of CBeebies, said: "We have a fantastic cast on this show, who work brilliantly as a team.

"Their rapport permeates through to the programme reflecting the characters as a group of friends working together. We are delighted to have David on board as part of the team. The physical energy in his performance works so well for animation and his sense of fun and cheeky humour will delight the older CBeebies audience."

The animated series - comprising 26 episodes - will in air early 2012.
