David Cameron's Tragic Call About a Hostage Murder

Fearing the deaths of an Italian and a British hostage in Nigeria, British and Nigerian forces decided to go in and rescue them without telling the Italian government first, but the captors killed the hostages. British Prime Minister David Cameron then had to call his Italian counterpart to tell him about the operation's tragic conclusion. The Associated Press reports that "the UK leader said that British authorities believed the men's lives were in 'imminent and growing danger' and a rescue attempt was mounted by Nigerian forces with British support." Cameron said in his statement that the Italians were only alerted after the operation was underway, the AP reports. "It was not immediately clear when the men were killed and Cameron's statement did not specify whether the rescue attempt was underway when the murders took place." Hostages Chris McManus (pictured) and Franco Lamolinara had been held in Nigeria since their capture last May.
