David Buskirk named Allegany County Teacher of the Year

Mar. 15—CUMBERLAND — David Buskirk of Beall Elementary School is the 2024-25 Allegany County Teacher of the Year.

The Allegany County Board of Education hosted the 36th annual Teacher of the Year celebration virtually to honor six educators for their dedication and commitment to student success.

Buskirk is a kindergarten teacher with 15 years of teaching experience. He is a graduate of Frostburg State University, where he received his master's degree in administration and supervision in 2012 and his bachelor's degree in elementary education in 2009. Buskirk serves as the co-chair for the school's English language arts team, is a member of the school improvement team and the attendance team. He has served as a coach and volunteer for Allegany County Special Olympics and is a mentor for student interns. Burskirk is working on his national board certification.

The other Teacher of the Year finalists were Jaclyn Boor, Braddock Middle School; Tina Kimmell, Flintstone Elementary School; Matthew Kline, Mount Savage School; Anne Stark, Allegany High School; and Jodie Sweeney, Cresaptown Elementary School.

Superintendent of Schools Jeff Blank, Board of Education President Robert Farrell and previous Teacher of the Year Joseph Thompson gave presentations. Representatives from Frostburg State University, Allegany County Education Association, Allegany College of Maryland and Allegany County Chamber of Commerce provided video presentations to this year's winner.

This year's selection committee included Thompson; Jennifer Howell, Allegany County government; Juli McCoy, Chamber of Commerce; Jen Flinn, Bishop Walsh School; and Kate Tummino, ACM.

Buskirk will be honored at a meeting of the Maryland State Board of Education and five state semifinalists will be invited to a reception in the fall for the announcement of the Maryland Teacher of the Year.
