Antolin famously introduced Bowie to his wife of 23 years, model Iman in 1990.

"It was on my mind to play matchmaker," Antolin previously told PEOPLE. After Bowie expressed interest, Antolin asked Iman: " 'Are you interested in meeting anyone? Are you single?' And she said, 'It all depends, darling!' "

The stylist invited both Iman and Bowie to his birthday dinner, and the rest was history.

The Somali model also mourned the hairstylist's death on social media, Tuesday, tweeting, "RIP Teddy Antolin... You will be missed."

Antolin originally attended seminary school before opting to change career courses entirely, according to his Sally Hershberger profile.

He owned his own Beverly Hills salon for six years in the 1970s before switching gears to work on editorial and video shoots with the likes of Gus Van Sant and Steven Meisel.

He also recently helped design hair for actress Raquel Welch's wig collection.

Antolin opened up to PEOPLE last month about working with Bowie and revealed how he crafted some of the Starman's wacky 'dos.

"All of his hairdos were always a collaboration between him and I, and we always talked about the look," Antolin said of Bowie's hair in the '70s and '80s.

Antolin was also responsible for the British rocker's Ziggy Stardust look. "[Bowie] with full-on makeup, looked unearthly, another sex and there was something about David that transcended fashion and he made it unique and you wanted to be like that," he shared.

He said of Bowie, "He was very focused and he knew everything about fashion, hair and makeup – it was fun. I would color his hair with blonde streaks and sometimes make it bolder and he never complained. He understood why."
