Daughter, son-in-law of Missouri politician killed in Haiti

MISSOURI – Missouri State Rep. Ben Baker says his daughter and son-in-law were both killed in Haiti in a gang attack.

“My heart is broken in a thousand pieces. I’ve never felt this kind of pain,” said Baker in a Facebook post Friday morning on the situation.

Baker (R-Neosho) says his daughter Natalie and his son-in-law, Davy Lloyd, were attacked by gangs and killed. They were both full-time missionaries in Haiti.

The Lloyd family runs the Nonprofit Missions in Haiti Inc., based out of Oklahoma. The group called for an “urgent prayer” in a Facebook post on Thursday, reporting that Davy, Natalie, and some kids were coming out of a church when they were attacked.

The group also runs a school for children as well as two churches in the outskirts of Port-au-Prince.

Baker and his wife, Naomi, are speaking out on the incident.

“She loved people, she was a sweetheart, but very determined,” he said. “Very organized, very stubborn, probably got a little bit of that from both of us.”

According to the Associated Press, various attacks have followed since Haiti announced a new prime minister on April 30. Gangs in Haiti have laid siege to several neighborhoods, burning homes and exchanging gunfire.

Representative Jim Murphy serves with Baker in the Missouri House. He says he is devastated.

“They decided they were going to follow the Lord’s work and go to Haiti. Actually, they were working to help the victims of the gangs that murdered them,” he said.

Senator Josh Hawley also took to X, formerly Twitter, urging the American Embassy to send help to the Lloyd’s as they were under siege. His office was told it was too dangerous, and Hawley was upset about nothing being done to protect them.

Two GoFundMe pages have been started to aid in funeral expenses and support for both the families.
