Dates, names to know for June 4 primary

May 17—It doesn't matter how Union County Republican voters decide for the two county supervisor seats on June 4; absentee or at the polls.

The number of people who vote will determine how effective June 4 will be. Candidates are incumbents Dennis Brown, Rick Friday and contestants Bill Oetken and Tom Spencer.

For two winners to be declared, the top two candidates must each receive at least 17.5% of the total number of votes cast. If that doesn't happen, the Union County Republican party will have to convene and determine the two winners. There are four candidates.

"It's important to get out and vote," said Union County Auditor Sandy Hysell whose office oversees elections. She explained dates and deadlines for the June 4 election before the candidate forum May 9 held at Southwestern Community College.

Absentee ballots were mailed beginning May 15. The last day for absentee ballot requests is Monday and they can be made at the auditor's office at the courthouse. Absentee voting in the courthouse will end at the close of business June 3. The courthouse will be open until 5 p.m. Friday, May 31 and 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 1 for voting needs. Absentee ballots must be returned to the courthouse by 8 p.m. June 4 to be counted.
