Date set for Alex Murdaugh’s sentencing on federal financial crimes
A sentencing date has been set for Alex Murdaugh for his federal financial crimes.
The convicted double murderer and disgraced Hampton County attorney, who pleaded guilty to a battery of federal financial crimes, will be sentenced April 1, 2024.
The sentencing will begin at 10:00 a.m. at the J. Waties Waring federal courthouse in Charleston.
On Sept. 18, 2023, Murdaugh pleaded guilty to 22 federal financial crimes, including wire fraud, bank fraud, money laundering, and conspiracy to commit bank and wire fraud.
Last March, Murdaugh was convicted of murdering his son Paul and wife, Maggie, at the family’s property, Moselle. At that trial, prosecutors from the South Carolina Attorney General’s Office said that Murdaugh’s motive was to avoid the looming “storm” of discovery for his financial crimes.
He is currently serving two concurrent life sentences in the South Carolina Department of Corrections for their murders.
On the stand, Murdaugh denied murdering his wife and son, but admitted to over a decade of thefts from his clients, close friends and the law firm that his family had found over a century before.
