New data suggests Galaxy S5 stole a surprising amount of business away from Apple
Earlier this week, we shared data from used gadget trade-in site Gazelle that showed iPhone users, for the most part, appeared to be largely uninterested in switching to Samsung’s latest flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S5. But as it turns out, a similar and perhaps more comprehensive study from a different trade-in service paints a very different picture.
UK-based gadget trade-in comparison website CompareMyMobile says it surveyed everyone who used its portal to trade in smartphones between February 24th when Samsung unveiled the Galaxy S5, and April 11th when the new handset launched.
“A new feature we’ve applied to the site now tracks what devices consumers have upgraded to,” CompareMyMobile co-founder Ashley Turner said. “Through this we can get a fantastic insight into the trends in both brand loyalty and operating platform churn.”
With this new feature, the company found that current iPhone owners in the UK were by far the largest group trading in their old phones in preparation to purchase a new Galaxy S5.
According to data provided to BGR, 37.48% of respondents planning to upgrade to the Galaxy S5 were trading in iPhones. That astonishing figure is more than double the percentage of users who were trading in a Samsung phone to upgrade to the Galaxy S5, which sat at 18.75%.
Here are the top-five models that were traded in for money towards a Galaxy S5 purchase, along with the percentage increase CompareMyMobile saw in trade-in volume:
Apple iPhone 4S – 210% trade-ins spike
Samsung Galaxy S3 – 196% trade-in spike
Apple iPhone 5S – 184% trade-in spike
Sony Xperia Miro – 182% trade-in spike
Nokia Lumia 1020 – 147% trade-in spike
