Danville Fire Dept. fights 3 fires within 1 mile over 3 days

DANVILLE, Ill. (WCIA) — The Danville Fire Department is investigating after three house fires broke out within a mile of each other over the course of three days.

One fire happened each day Saturday, Sunday and Monday, all at different houses. The cause of each fire is undetermined, department officials said.

The first fire on Saturday happened at 9:28 a.m. in the area of State Street and Cleveland Avenue. No injuries were reported, but the fire cost an estimated $33,000 of damage. Firefighters were on the scene until 11:34 a.m.

The second fire on Sunday started 36 hours later at 9:16 p.m., and it happened at Griggs Street and Bremer Avenue, less than a mile away from the State Street fire. Firefighters found no one inside but they did rescue a dog and a cat was able to escape the home on its own; neither pet was harmed.

Officials said firefighting efforts were complicated by the fire being located in a concealed attic space that was hard to access. Intense heat also required firefighters to take turns working inside; two firefighters did experience heat-related illness while working, but both are ok.

Firefighters remained on the scene until 1:04 a.m. Monday morning to ensure the fire was fully extinguished. The fire cost an estimated $12,000 worth of damage to the structure while another $5,000 in personal property was lost.

The last fire happened Monday evening on Lake Street, between the previous two fires, at 8:30 p.m. That fire also started in the attic and it was fully engulfed when firefighters were able to access the stairs leading up there. All three people living at the home, and their dog, were able to escape the fire which cost an estimated $31,000 in damage.

Another two firefighters were also treated for heat exhaustion; one was treated at the scene while another was treated at the hospital and released. Firefighters remained on the scene until 12:33 a.m. on Tuesday.

Officials said that there were no functioning smoke detectors in any home when the fires happened. All of fire fires remain under investigation.
