Absolute pandemonium broke out on social media on Friday night (December 7) as EastEnders star Danny Dyer presented Have I Got News For You.

The mere idea of the actor hosting the BBC One quiz show was apparently enough to leave many viewers feeling personally affronted, and some of them wasted no time in insulting his presenting skills on Twitter.

One person tweeted: “Whatever #HIGNFY were hoping to achieve with Danny Dyer as host, it didn't work. Paul Merton struggled with it. I've got nothing at all against Danny Dyer but swearing for laughs is for the brain dead (Geordie Shore etc etc). It's not really for satire."

Ouch. What did Geordie Shore do so wrong?

However, there was just as much support for Dyer, with many jumping to his defence.

"Danny Dyer is an absolute legend, top notch job on #HIGNFY people are so needlessly annoyed at it, he's a very funny bloke and he's hosting excellently," wrote one fan.

And another added: "Was getting so sick of #hignfy having the same clique of privately educated luvvies guest hosting, so great to see Danny Dyer doing it so well. BBC might like to recall that what made It good in the early days was ordinary man Paul Merton mocking pompous Angus D."

Have I Got News For You continues next Friday (December 14) at 9pm on BBC One, with Gary Lineker set to host.
