Dan Gurney Actually Made a Podcast About Racing Before Podcasting Existed

From Road & Track

Dan Gurney's illustrious driving career included famous wins in Formula 1, NASCAR, Indy car, and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. As a team owner and race car constructor, Gurney's innovations delivered victories at the Indy 500 and numerous championships spanning open-wheel and sports car competition.

Thanks to 1965's "Dan Gurney and His World of Racing," the driving force behind All American Racers can also be credited for another motorsports milestone: Podcasting pioneer.

The 51-year-old vinyl masterpiece and its 38 minutes of storytelling, commentary and ambient racing sounds from a variety of machines Gurney drove is pure audio delight.

Part autobiography, part celebration, this long-playing record was the most direct form of communication from the most famous driver of the 1960s to his legions of fans. In contrast to a quick-fire podcast, and considering all of the audio elements involved, it must have taken months to capture and produce this LP. (The album even includes a special acknowledgement to Road & Track, although I'm not exactly sure what we did to deserve it…)

Fortunately, this incredible journey back to 1965 is a gem; Dan's sense of humor and humble, self-deprecating ways shine through on this portal to a magical time in motor racing.
