Dallas police officer shot while following stolen vehicle; 1 suspect at large: officials

A Dallas police officer underwent surgery at a local hospital early Thursday after being shot while following a stolen vehicle in Oak Cliff, officials said.

Officers were working an undercover operation when they saw a vehicle driving erratically around 12:45 a.m. in the 3200 block of Easter Avenue. They followed the suspect vehicle in an unmarked police car, officials said. Someone in the suspect vehicle fired at the officers, and one of them was struck in the hip when a bullet went through the driver’s side door.

Air One and officers on the ground continued to pursue the suspects, and five teens were taken into custody in the 7200 block of Chesterfield Drive, police said. Three of them were later released without being charged.

Jaheart Nickelberry, 17, was arrested and faces charges of aggravated assault, evading arrest/detention in a motor vehicle, aggravated robbery and theft of more than $30,000 but less than $150,000, police said. A a 15-year-old girl was also charged with evading arrest/detention.

A male suspect is still at large, according to police. No description of the suspect is currently available.

No officers fired their weapons during the incident, officials said.

The injured officer hasn’t been publicly identified, but police said he underwent surgery at Methodist Dallas Medical Center and is in stable condition. He’s been with the department for four years.

Shortly after 4 a.m., Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia said on X that the officer was out of surgery and in great spirits.

“First question he asked… “Did we catch em?” What a warrior. God bless the peacemakers!” Garcia said.

Two of the suspects were also taken to a local hospital — one with chest pain and the other with unspecified non-life-threatening injuries, police said. It’s not clear if they were the two who were arrested or among those who were later released.

Investigators determined the suspect vehicle was stolen. Police said they recovered a gun that was thrown from the vehicle and found another gun inside the vehicle.

The investigation is ongoing, according to police.
