Superlatives have been flowing in from far and wide for Dallas Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs on his remarkable start to the season.

Diggs has recorded an interception in five straight games to open the season and he leads the NFL with six interceptions.

After his latest pick in Sunday’s 44-20 victory against the New York Giants — when he baited quarterback Mike Glennon to throw a deep ball to receiver C.J. Board before tracking him down and intercepting it — former Cowboys greats Troy Aikman and Michael Irvin compared him to Hall of Fame cornerback Deion Sanders.

Team vice president Stephen Jones made a similar statement, calling it Deion-like.

And Tampa Bay cornerback Richard Sherman said Diggs should be the favorite for the NFL Defensive Player of the Year.

And that’s before understanding just how remarkable Diggs’ performance was on Sunday.

He actually got his hands on three balls, including two more potential interceptions, following a week in which he struggled in practice dealing with pink eye in both eyes, according to defensive coordinator Dan Quinn.

“One of the things that is remarkable about him is he really had a tough week battling the pink eye, both eyes, gunk and nastiness flowing out of his eyes,” Quinn said. “It really shows this is a true competitor. To go for the ball skills, to finish it out. It would have been easy for him to back away and say I’ve got to get this right, feel like you want to scratch your eyes out. I thought it showed a lot for him to battle through.“

Quinn said has always known Diggs had great ball skills, but he’s been impressed most by his competitiveness and work ethic.

“He’s quiet by nature, but I’d say don’t confuse that quiet demeanor,” Quinn said. “This is a true wolf in sheep’s clothing. I can tell you this is a rare competitor who works really hard at his game.”
