TOAST, N.C. (WGHP) — NASCAR Hall of Famer Dale Earnhardt Jr. spent several hours Thursday spreading the word that mayonnaise isn’t allowed inside toast.

Earnhardt Jr.’s presence in the small town just adjacent to Mount Airy is part of a product activation by his long time sponsor Hellmann’s Mayonnaise.

The basic premise is that when making a grilled cheese sandwich, instead of using butter or margarine on the bread, use mayonnaise as the spread.

What’s behind the name change of a popular Carowinds roller coaster?

A few hundred Earnhardt Jr. fans spent the early afternoon in line waiting to catch a glimpse of the longtime most popular driver in NASCAR.

Ultimately, he spent a few hours handing out free grilled cheese sandwiches to the fans after running around the little town knocking on the doors of unsuspecting fans with a film crew not too far behind.

Video from that should come out in the near future in the form of online and television advertising.

Earnhardt Jr. spoke to FOX8 Sports’ Danny Harnden on Thursday about working with a brand on such an out of the box promotion.
