Dak Prescott will start game after bye as Cowboys put off Tony Romo decision

The Dallas Cowboys are kicking the Tony Romo decision down the road another week.

The Cowboys are on a bye this week, and rookie Dak Prescott will start the first game after the bye against the Philadelphia Eagles, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. Romo might not be ready for the game after that, either, Rapoport reported.

The Cowboys’ stance on Romo has seemed to shift. Where it seemed early in the process like Romo would definitely get his job back when he recovered from a broken bone in his back, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones seems to be having doubts himself lately. Prescott (who said this week he’s not letting the questions about who will start affect him) has played well enough that it will be hard to bench him. It will also be hard to bench Romo, the team’s longtime starter who has never posted a rating below 90 in a full season.

Romo’s injury will give the Cowboys some time. Had Prescott struggled, maybe Romo would be rushed back into action. There’s no need for that. And getting Romo back to full health before he returns is a convenient way for the Cowboys to put off a decision that will make headlines no matter what the ultimate choice is.

The Cowboys’ quarterback decision is a fascinating story. We just won’t know the answer for a little while longer.
