Daisha Corrina Butler, 23, was convicted Friday of crimes that included first-degree murder in the July 2021 shooting death in central Topeka of Nevaeh Martinez, 17.

Butler had initially been charged with crimes that included intentional and premeditated first-degree murder in the death of Martinez, whom authorities said was found in the street suffering from a gunshot wound to the back of her head on July 3, 2021, in the area of 1104 S.W. Clay.

Martinez died the next day and Butler was arrested that same day.

An eight-man, four-woman jury about 6 p.m. Friday found Butler guilty of the lesser crimes of first-degree murder committed during an inherently dangerous felony, reckless but unintentional second-degree murder and aggravated child endangerment.

Shawnee County District Court Judge Brett Watson scheduled Butler's sentencing for 3 p.m. July 14.

The case was prosecuted by Deputy Shawnee County District Attorney Will Manly. Butler was represented by Shaye Downing, who was court-appointed.
