'The Daily Show' defends ESPN anchor for calling Trump a white supremacist
ESPN host Jemele Hill found herself in the news a lot this week after tweeting a controversial comment about Donald Trump. Hill tweeted, “Donald Trump is a white supremacist who has largely surrounded himself w/ other white supremacists.” On The Daily Show With Trevor Noah, Roy Wood Jr. defended Hill’s tweet.
Wood didn’t think it was a crazy thing to say, considering that Congress just passed a unanimous bipartisan resolution asking Trump to condemn white supremacists. Wood added, “Trump is the only white dude I know who had to sign paperwork to prove he doesn’t like Nazis.”
White House Response
After the controversial tweet, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders made a statement condemning the tweet and said she thought it was a “fireable offense.” Trevor Noah played devil’s advocate, saying both women were just expressing their opinions. But Wood explained that it was where Sanders expressed her opinion that was the problem. Wood said, “The difference was that one was on her Twitter account. The other was on a podium at the White House.” And Wood gave a pretty vivid example of why people shouldn’t express their opinions from an official position like that. “If you’re standing behind a register at a Jack in the Box and you’re, like, ‘Yo, my personal opinion, these burgers make your ass bleed,’” Wood said, “I’m going to White Castle!”
