Swiss Supermarket Starts Stocking Bug Burgers

Insects may be the food of the future, and one supermarket giant is eager to get at the front of the trend. Coop, a Swiss supermarket chain, will start stocking burgers and “meatballs” made of insects in its stores this spring. A spokesperson said that Coop’s success has been due to its capacity to identify trends, such as insects. They’re a sustainable, environmentally sound food source rich in protein and vitamins, and once people get past the “ick” factor, the bugs could be pretty popular. Coop says it has partnered with a Swiss company called Essento to create the insect-based dishes that will be appearing on its shelves in the next few months.

Restaurant Delivers Cold Medicine With Food

Feeleys Chippy, a restaurant in Belfast, Northern Ireland, got a surprising delivery order this past weekend when a customer used the “add comments” section to ask the delivery driver to pick up some cold medicine for her. “Will you please stop in Spar on the way and get me Benylin Cold and Flu tablets and I’ll give you the money,” she wrote. “Only ordering food so I can get the tablets I’m dying sick.” Feeleys Chippy came through and sent a pack of the medicine along with the customer’s order. “Only the best service here at Feeleys,” the restaurant wrote on its Facebook page. The post has been liked more than 14,000 times and shared more than 3,700 times.

Inventor of Kinder Surprise Eggs Dies Aged 83

Kinder Surprise Eggs are not legal in the United States, but in much of the rest of the world, the egg-shaped chocolate candy with a toy inside is an icon. The Italian inventor of the Kinder Surprise Egg passed away last Thursday at the age of 83. According to The Local, Morto Salice from Turin, Italy, started working for the Ferrero food group back in 1960. The company was looking for a way to get more use out of its unused Easter egg molds when Salice invented the Kinder Surprise Egg: a chocolate egg with a capsule inside, containing a tiny toy. The Kinder Surprise Egg became a huge success and still is to this day. Salice also helped develop other famous chocolates like Ferrero Rocher and Pocket Coffee.

Joël Robuchon Plans New Restaurant in Geneva

Acclaimed French chef Joël Robuchon just announced the future opening of a brand-new restaurant in Geneva, Switzerland. According to The Local Switzerland, Robuchon says he will be opening a new version of his L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon restaurants in Geneva in 2018. L’Atelier means “workshop,” and the concept takes a more informal, counter-service approach to high-end dining. The newest L’Atelier will reportedly be located in Geneva’s Hotel President Wilson, a five-star hotel that boasts the largest penthouse suite in Europe. Robuchon’s world-wide restaurant empire currently possesses a combined 31 Michelin stars.
