New daily direct flights from Rochester to Fort Lauderdale announced
Another airline is getting in on the direct flight fun as Spirit Airlines is adding daily nonstop flights between the Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport and the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in southeast Florida.
The service is set to start on Aug. 14 and will mark the first daily nonstop air service to the Fort Lauderdale airport since 2008, according to a news release from Monroe County Executive Adam Bello.
"Florida markets are among the most popular destinations for Monroe County and Finger Lakes region residents," Bello said in the release. "Whether you are planning a family vacation to the beautiful beaches of southeast Florida or looking for an affordable nonstop flight to catch a Caribbean cruise, the addition of Spirit Airlines' air service to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport will bring greater access and convenience to Rochester passengers."

Spirit Airlines also has daily nonstop service to Orlando International Airport and seasonal nonstop service to Myrtle Beach International Airport to and from Rochester.
The daily nonstop service between Rochester and Fort Lauderdale will add over 1,200 weekly seats to Florida, says Bello's office, but the days of the week may vary in November, December and January.
Spirit Airlines is currently the largest air service carrier operating out of the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, and can connect Rochesterians to popular warm weather locations like Cancun, San Juan and other Caribbean and Central American beach destinations as well as Fort Lauderdale-based cruise ships and the Florida Keys.

This comes on the heels of Tuesday's announcement detailing Southwest Airlines' addition of nonstop service between Rochester and the Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas.
