Daily Digit: Hate crimes continue to rise in the United States

Daily Digit is the story behind the numbers that make our world work. Today we’re looking at hate crimes in the U.S. Hate crimes rose by 17 percent in the U.S. in 2017, according to a new FBI report, with law enforcement reporting over 7,000 hate crimes. Nearly 60 percent of those incidents were based on race and ethnicity. And crimes were most likely to occur inside or outside of someone’s home. More than half of all offenders were white. The number of hate crimes committed might actually be higher since there are still many departments that don’t report hate crimes to the FBI.
