Manuel Rodriguez, 28, had just returned from grocery shopping with his family at 8:15 p.m. Sunday, according to the Houston Police Department. The dad was picking up bags of food when an unidentified assailant approached, holding a gun and demanding cash.

The two scuffled, with the would-be shooting Rodriguez once in the chest, police said. Rodriguez then pulled out his own gun and fired several rounds, police said.

His wife and three children, ages 1, 2 and 8, were all inside the car, the woman told KTRK-TV. She asked that her name be withheld and her face not shown.
