Dad Takes Elf on the Shelf Photos to the Next Level

After seeing their Facebook feeds fill up with friends’ “Elf on the Shelf” photos, one couple decided to take the holiday tradition up a notch — creating scenes not with the popular doll but with a life-size, human elf.

STORY: 5 Traits That Elf on the Shelf Promotes

Joe Wynberg, dad of four, is dressing as the mischievous Elf, whom the couple have named Fle. Joe’s wife, Megan, is taking photos of Fle in all sorts of hilarious — sometimes even compromising — positions and sharing them on Facebook.

In their first photo, posted on Nov. 30, Megan wrote, “So we finally caved and decided to do the ‘Elf on the Shelf’ thing. The kids are going to be so surprised! We named our elf Fle and he will be in some pretty precarious spots over the next 24 days! Enjoy.” In the original photo, Fle sits atop the refrigerator, but as the days have progressed, the poses have gotten increasingly unexpected: Fle hanging upside down from the roof, urinating into the chimney, even ziplining across the Christmas lights.

In one picture, Fle is duct-taped to the wall, seemingly put there by superheroes like Spiderman and the Hulk. “I brought in reinforcement to get Fle the ‘Elf on the Shelf’ under control,” Megan wrote on Facebook. In another, he’s buried under the Christmas tree. “So we got our tree up and decorated with the kids today,” Megan wrote. “And then Fle tried to get in the tree like his other ‘Elf on the Shelf’ buddies.”

STORY: Reasons Parents Love (and Hate) Elf on the Shelf

With four kids, Joe told Buzzfeed Canada, finding time for the nightly shoot has been tricky, but he says his friends have come to count on Fle’s arrival. “Now people are looking forward to it every night at around 8 or 9 o’clock to see what Fle is going to get into next,” he said. “I don’t think we were planning to all 24 days at first, but now we’re kind of forced to.”

Their friends on Facebook are indeed riveted. “I hypothesize all day to try and come up with what I think would be the next logical event in these shenanigans… But you two always surprise me!” wrote one user. Another added, “Do you guys even sleep anymore?”

One pal even declared the couple up there with Santa Claus, telling them: “You’ve officially won Christmas.”
