DA candidates in Dona Ana County invited to forum

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Voters in Dona Ana County will have the opportunity next week to get to know the candidates in the district attorney race for that county.

A candidate forum, with all candidates invited, will be held at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 24 at the Las Cruces City Hall Council Chambers, 700 N. Main.

Candidates invited to participate are: Ramona J. Martinez; Fernando R. Macias; incumbent Gerald Milton Byers; and Shaharazad Booth, all Democrats.  Also invited is Michael E. Cain, the sole Republican candidate in the D.A. race.

Three non-partisan organizations are co-sponsoring in the event — League of Women Voters of Southern New Mexico (LWVSNM); the Doña Ana County Chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP-DAC); and the Southern New Mexico Bar Association (SNMBA).

“We felt it was important to join with other non-partisan organizations in hosting a forum,” said Dr. Bobbie Green, president of NAACP-DAC.  “This will let voters know more about the candidates, their expertise, and how they would oversee this important office.”

“This is a great opportunity to hear directly from the candidates,” said Kathe Kanim, LWVSNM co-president.  “We’ll follow guidelines on how the forum will operate, but it’s important for the public to be able to ask questions about the issues significant to them.”

“The legal community is invested in ensuring that the people of Doña Ana County hear from the candidates for the highest elected local executive office in this region,” added Israel Chávez, president of the SNMBA. “The attorneys have come together to help ensure that all the candidates have a chance to shine and that voters can choose the best person for this job.”

Early voting for the New Mexico Primary election begins on May 7 and expanded early voting begins May 18. The last day of early voting will be June 1. Election Day in New Mexico is Tuesday, June 4.
