D3 team wins by 90+ points for second time this season

At this point, a mercy rule probably could be useful for Division III football. For the second time this season, with No. 4 St. Thomas’ 97-0 win over St. Olaf on Saturday, a D-III program put up 90 or more points in a shutout victory.

To make matters even more interesting for St. Thomas on Saturday, it was apparently already up 91-0 with 15 seconds left on the clock and the team decided well, the score wasn’t high enough. So, it ran it in for another touchdown score to give it a 97-0 win.

Of course, as in all good games, there was also a coaching saga — St. Olaf’s head coach, James Kilian, was the offensive coordinator for St. Thomas its three previous seasons. St. Thomas really showed no mercy.

St. Thomas is no stranger to beating teams by gaudy numbers, beating Hamline 84-0 earlier this year. St. Thomas is now 9-1.

Also this season, Division III Saint John’s put up an excessive 98-0 score over College of St. Scholastica to open its season on Sept. 2. Saint John’s didn’t even score in the final 10 minutes of that contest, saving St. Scholastica a potential triple-digit loss. Saint John’s is now 9-1 overall, 7-1 in its conference.
