The things a koala will do for a drink.

A thirsty koala has climbed up the wheel of a bicycle to get a sip of water, while stranded on the side of a freeway in Adelaide, Australia on Tuesday.

Nick Lothian, who was travelling with a group of cyclists, posted a picture on his Facebook page, which showed the dehydrated marsupial taking a swig from his drink bottle while perched on top of the wheel.

Lothian told The Advertiser he noticed the koala when he rode past stayed with the parched koala as animal services were called to help.

Koalas normally keep themselves hydrated by munching on eucalyptus leaves, but do drink water in hot conditions or if there isn't sufficient moisture in surrounding areas due to drought, for instance.

It certainly isn't the first time it's happened, with koalas drinking from the gutter or in the aftermath of bushfires.

Aussies are certainly a thirsty bunch.
